Here at DHU, we love to celebrate the work that our brilliant people undertake to provide quality and compassionate care to our patients. Today we are going to visit our Urgent Treatment Centre in Derby to meet Livia Rodger.

Having joined this centre nearly two years ago, Livia has developed her career to move from reception and different administrative positions to where she is now, the Operational Manager of our Derby UTC.

“Day-to-day, I oversee the staffing of our people at the UTC, ensuring that there are enough colleagues to meet the needs of our patients,” Livia explained. “For example, during the winter, from November to March, the number of patients we see might increase due to seasonal illnesses such as flu. This means we might need more respiratory support for our patients compared to the summer which is where I come in.”

“Another big part of my job is handling queries from the patients themselves. These could be about anything from waiting times to treatment and medical advice, whatever they need to know.”

“The best part about the job is that no one day is the same. One day could be quite calm and the next minute there may be an influx of patients, or a serious emergency that we have to prioritise. This brings with it a challenge and the need for adaptability to the role, something that was perhaps missing in previous positions.”

Regarding DHU’s takeover of the Derby UTC in July 2024, Livia had this to say: “I cannot believe the difference. With the new ledger system, we are now able to offer patients the option to leave the UTC and return for their appointment later in the day. This has led to huge reductions in waiting time and the number of patients in the waiting room.”

Going forward, Livia added, “I am looking forward to building strong relationships with my new colleagues at DHU as well as helping to improve key areas of the Urgent Treatment Centre by collaborating with others in the organisation.”
