In just one month, six of our Charity Champions will embark on an extraordinary journey to one of the harshest environments on Earth. Their mission? To raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK and make a positive impact on local communities.

The team will head to Morocco from September 10th to 17th. They will cover different routes daily and will also be spending time to deliver healthcare and support to community projects at the Taghbalte Secondary School.

Our 6 DHU Charity Champions are:

  •        Dr. Steve Lloyd (Non-Executive Director)

  •        Viny Singh (IT Digital Project Manager)

  •        Debbie Kemp (Operations Manager UEC North)

  •        Kirsty Osborn (Deputy Director Urgent Care North)

  •        Stephen Bateman (CEO)

  •        Dr. Saurabh Johri (Clinical Director UEC)

This is an ambitious project involving daily treks with camel support, food, water and bivouac accommodation. It will also see them provide Basic Life Support and First Aid training to around 40 primary and secondary school teachers.

The journey will also see them support the construction of a women's shelter at Ifrad School to create a vital meeting space for women to feel safe and protected. It is an incredible challenge and one that literally puts DHU on the map.

Viny Singh has led on the organisation of the challenge, he told us: "It all started at the 2023 CARE Awards when Steve Lloyd and Debbie Kemp heard about my previous trek for charity and came up to me with an idea for a challenge that slowly morphed into this one. All of us have undertaken major challenges for charity, I suppose everyone knows or has a connection with somebody affected by Cancer and our main focus was to give others HOPE that anything is possible in life.

"The terrain is going to be unlike anything we've experienced before as the heat and humidity of the days, the cold of the night and walking in sand is incredibly draining. It will be difficult to acclimatise to, but we are determined to do it for many good causes."

Chief Executive Stephen Bateman added: "I was impressed by the challenge and to be able to do some practical good at the same time, pass on essential first aid and CPR training, it's the perfect embodiment of what DHU is all about. It makes me proud to be associated with this, I hope our DHU family can get behind us and do something really special."

The team has set up a Just Giving page, if you would like to support them in their aim of raising £2,000 for Cancer Research UK then click here where you can donate and read more about what the team are attempting to do.

We will be following their preparations and hope to be able to bring you pictures of their progress whilst they are in Morocco.
