At DHU Healthcare, we are fortunate to have a dedicated group of volunteers who play a vital role in improving patient experiences and shaping the future of healthcare.

In this edition of our Volunteer Spotlight, we are thrilled to introduce Jenny Toal, a passionate advocate for patients and an active member of the Leicestershire Patient Participation Group (LPPG) at Loughborough Urgent Care Centre (LUCC).

Speaking to us, Jenny said: “Right from my school days I always liked getting involved with action groups, so it was quite natural for me to join the LPPG later in life. I didn’t retire from work until I was 70 years old and prior to retirement, I looked for ways and activities to keep brain and body active; joining the group at the Urgent Care Centre was one of them.”

“Joining anything new can be quite formidable and understandably so when facing a sea of new faces for the first time. But you soon realise everyone is friendly, normal, just ordinary people who, like me, would like to contribute and offer viewpoints and ideas from a patient’s perspective. The meetings are attended by medical staff and officers from DHU who are very friendly too and listen intently to our points and suggestions. They will then take them forwards for us as we are all here with the purpose of making the patient experience as good as it can be.

“Over the years, I have learned so much about the LUCC and have been very impressed with their work and commitment to patients. We trial and discuss new ideas and quite often plans are modified as a result of our input.

“The LPGG is the voice and support of the patient. One of the things I like to do is inform my local community of how best to access the Urgent Care Centre and what treatments and services are provided to ensure people go to the right place for treatment. I have also learned so much about the NHS and the challenges associated with working within tighter budgets and the commitment of staff to maintain a high standard of patient care.

“I joined LPGG and other patient groups as I’m a great believer in the NHS being there for people when they need it. We, the people through our various groups including your local PPG, feed into the National patient framework and can make our points to National Bodies including the Government. So, if you’re interested do come along and give us a try; we will make you very welcome!”

If you share Jenny's passion for making a difference in healthcare and wish to contribute to the patient-centric initiatives, we invite you to join the LPPG or explore other patient groups in your local area. Jenny and her fellow volunteers will warmly welcome you, offering a supportive environment where you can actively shape the future of healthcare.
