This February, DHU Healthcare is proud to celebrate Dignity Action Month, a time to reflect on the importance of dignity, respect, and compassionate care in everything we do.

As part of this national initiative, we have been encouraging colleagues to sign the Dignity Charter and champion a culture of kindness and respect across our organisation.

In recognition of her outstanding commitment to dignity in care, Julie Tomlinson was recently honoured at the Derby Digni-Tea event, hosted by Derby Safeguarding Adults Board. She received her award from The Mayor of Derby, Ged Potter, and Richard Proctor, Independent Chair of Derby Safeguarding Adults Board, at a special ceremony held at the Council House on Monday, 3rd February.

Julie’s nomination highlighted her dedication to promoting dignity and safeguarding within DHU Healthcare. Reflecting on her award, Julie shared:

“I am truly honoured to receive this recognition, but dignity in care is not something I do alone – it’s a shared responsibility. It’s about treating each other with kindness and respect, whether we’re caring for patients, supporting colleagues, or simply interacting in our daily lives. I encourage everyone to consider becoming a Dignity Champion and making a difference.”

Julie leads the adult safeguarding team with passion for dignity, respect, and zero tolerance for all forms of abuse. In addition to developing policies and procedures that protect both patients and staff, she actively supports colleagues in upholding these values. Through her leadership, more than 100 individuals have signed up as Dignity Champions within our organisation.

Rhonda Pickering, Deputy Director of Nursing & Quality, praised Julie’s contributions:

“Julie’s dedication to dignity and safeguarding is truly inspiring. She leads by example, ensuring that respect, compassion, and the highest standards of care are embedded in everything we do at DHU Healthcare. Her passion for promoting a culture of dignity not only benefits our patients but also creates a supportive environment for our staff.”

As we continue to mark Dignity Action Month, we invite all colleagues to reflect on how they can uphold dignity in all aspects of our work. One simple way to get involved is by becoming a Dignity Champion. To learn more, visit the Dignity in Care website here.
