In celebration of National Payroll Week 2024, which runs from September 2nd to 6th, we're highlighting the vital work of our payroll team in keeping DHU Healthcare running smoothly. Today, we're featuring Tina Hulley, who is one of our payroll administrators and has been with us for three years. Prior to joining us, Tina also worked in payroll for a transport company.

Tina didn’t always see herself in payroll. As she explains, "It’s not something that's really suggested during career days at school. You don’t hear much about payroll as a career path, and there aren’t many role models in this field that you can necessarily aspire to. Most of us in payroll will readily admit that we fell into it. You start with some administrative tasks, maybe handle a few payroll responsibilities to help out, and then realise it’s actually quite a satisfying job.”

What Tina enjoys most about working in payroll is its process-driven nature. "If you're someone who likes ticking things off and working with numbers, payroll can be really fulfilling. It’s one of those jobs that flies under the radar—but everyone needs our support at some time in their working life. Most people don’t think about payroll unless there's a problem, but we’re always busy behind the scenes ensuring everything runs smoothly."

For Tina, the importance of teamwork and communication within the payroll department, is a must. "We rely heavily on accurate and timely information from across the organisation, and with DHU being so large and spread out, that can be challenging. We’ve learned to adapt and strengthen our processes to manage these challenges, but it’s definitely a team effort."

Reflecting on her role, Tina shares how supportive DHU and her manager, Andy, have been in helping her grow. "Andy is an amazing manager. He’s always asking what we want to learn and how we want to develop. Whether it’s shadowing senior colleagues or taking on new responsibilities, I’ve been given every opportunity to learn and advance. That support makes a huge difference and has allowed me to expand my skills and confidence in the role."

Overall, Tina finds her work in payroll interesting and rewarding. "It’s not just about numbers; it's about ensuring everyone gets paid accurately and on time, which is crucial to the smooth running of every organisation."
