At DHU Healthcare, we take great pride in the work of our primary care service teams across Leicester and beyond. This week, we're excited to introduce you to Suraj Nundra, one of our team leaders at Heron GP Surgery in Leicester.

Suraj started his journey with us as an apprentice and has since developed his skills and responsibilities to become a valued team leader. In this blog, we'll learn more about Suraj's background, his experiences as an apprentice and his current role at Heron GP Surgery.

Suraj told us: “Prior to working at DHU I was at WQE college studying business, law and sports. I achieved my grades, but wasn't sure what I wanted to do next. I knew I didn’t want to go down the university route and started looking at doing an apprenticeship as an alternative - and that's when I heard about the apprenticeship program at DHU Healthcare.

“I began my business admin apprenticeship back in 2021, at the Thurmaston GP Surgery, and was supported by DHU throughout the process. I liked the idea of being able to learn on the job, rather than just sitting in a classroom all day. Plus, the apprenticeship offered a clear pathway for career development, which was important to me.

“As a team leader at Heron GP Surgery now, I'm responsible for overseeing the admin team and making sure everything runs smoothly. I really enjoy the leadership aspect of my job and it's been great to see how much I've grown since I started as an apprentice.

“My day starts by checking my emails and responding to any urgent requests from chemists, consultants or other external bodies. I then focus on creating rotas for the admin team and completing other important tasks to ensure the smooth running of the surgery. Heron GP Surgery covers two sites, Merlyn Vaz and St. Matthews, so as you can imagine there is a lot to juggle at once.”

Speaking about how he has developed within the company, Suraj said: “Unlike some companies, at DHU there is a clear pathway to progress within Primary Care. I started as an apprentice and now I'm a Team Leader. There are opportunities to progress further and my aim is to become an Assistant Practice Manager. DHU provides support to help achieve those goals and make those career advancements possible.

“I really appreciate the supportive environment here. There are always opportunities to learn and develop, and everyone is encouraged to share their ideas and suggestions. It's also great to work for an organisation that is committed to improving healthcare access and outcomes for everyone.

"I would like to give a special mention to Lucy Underwood, my previous manager, and Isaac Haines, my current manager. Lucy supported me a lot and helped me develop my skills. Isaac is a great role model as he is always composed and never stresses out, which is a valuable trait in a manager. Their support has been instrumental in my professional growth and development.”

Thanks, Suraj, for sharing your story with us!

We're proud to have you on our team and excited to see what the future holds for you at DHU Healthcare.
