Richard Harris-Sampson is a Non-Clinical Performance Manager based at DHU’s NHS111 site in Oldbury. He began his journey in NHS111 15 years ago as a Health Advisor and has since progressed into a leadership role that combines operational oversight with supporting and developing people across the service.
Beyond his core role, Richard is passionately involved in promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion across DHU. He is the Chair of HEART, our newly launched LGBTQIA+ staff network, where he champions a staff-led approach to support, inclusion, and visibility.
I can't imagine not working with these people.
“In my current role I manage team performance and work closely with health advisors and colleagues to ensure high-quality service delivery in a fast-paced and often challenging environment. I am passionate about creating a positive workplace culture, where staff feel supported and valued, particularly given the demanding nature of NHS111 work.
“I absolutely love what I do. I’ve been with DHU a few years now and I’ve progressed into a role where I get to support our amazing NHS111 team every day. The people here are fantastic and they make the job what it is. I just can’t imagine not being around them. They’ve become such a big part of my life.”
I didn’t want our staff network to be a tick-box exercise.
“Since joining, I’ve seen DHU take real steps forward in terms of equality, diversity and inclusion, not just in policy but in action. It feels authentic, and I’m proud to be part of making it better for everyone.
“When I got involved with the new LGBTQIA+ Staff Network, I knew I wanted it to be led by staff, not by corporate agendas. I didn’t want it to exist just to say it existed, I wanted it to mean something. Zahra {Director of People & Organisational Development) and Nia (Wellbeing Lead) have been brilliant allies and supporters of the work we’re doing, and I’ve really tried to make sure that the voices of our colleagues are front and centre. It’s all about asking: what do you want from this? and how can we support you better?”
Pride was such a brilliant day.
“This year’s recent Birmingham Pride was my third time attending as part of DHU and it was amazing. The atmosphere was just incredible and full of joy, solidarity and support. It really reminded me why this matters. We had colleagues giving up their time, coming together, showing up for one another, it was fantastic to be a part of that. Events like this matter and I’d love to see even more DHU colleagues get involved in the future.
“I’ve even got a few ideas in the pipeline for a DHU Pride nothing confirmed yet, but I’m going big with the plans! Watch this space.”
