Meet Mark Neve, who is one of our Workforce Coordinators in Urgent Care South (Northamptonshire). Joining us in 2019 as a driver, Mark's career journey has seen him quickly progress within his time at DHU Healthcare.

Previously working in local government, Mark found his way into healthcare, seamlessly transitioning from the driver's seat to the receptionist's desk. He recalls the early days, picking up shifts and gradually assuming the responsibilities of a Dispatch Coordinator. The progression was organic, a testament to Mark's dedication and adaptability. Day to day he now sets up the base early in the morning, ensuring equipment readiness and clinician allocations.

"There's a strong sense of community here. When you walk in, it doesn't feel like a typical workplace; it feels like entering a second family. Stuart and Gary make an effort to check in on everyone during weekends or evenings, and that's really valuable."

Beyond his role at DHU, Mark extends his commitment to community service. As a volunteer for North Northampton First Responders, he is an integral part of the East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) Community First Responder (CFR) scheme. This initiative equips volunteers to respond swiftly to emergencies, bridging the crucial gap between a 999 call and professional assistance. Mark's dedication to this cause is underscored by the gratitude received from EMAS, acknowledging the foundational work done by responders.

"Most of the time, when EMAS arrives while we're there, they're really grateful. We handle a lot of the basic work, allowing them to focus on the more complex care. We provide essential equipment like BP machines, BM machines and thermometers before they come in with a life pack. I've never regretted it; it's incredibly rewarding."

Reflecting on the broader healthcare landscape, Mark explained: "People often underestimate the pressure healthcare services face, particularly during this time of the year. You could visit your GP or pharmacy, but there's not enough awareness about the services. We're consistently trying to guide people on which service to choose. It's beneficial because people realise there are alternative options, like NHS111."

Mark’s journey represents the adaptable and resourceful nature of healthcare professionals. His story not only underscores the evolution of roles within urgent care but also highlights the integral role community responders play in the broader healthcare system.

As healthcare continues to evolve, individuals like Mark remain the unsung heroes, navigating the intricate web of urgent care with dedication and compassion.
