Today we’re catching up with Luke Upshall, who has recently started as an IT Project Manager at DHU Healthcare, bringing extensive experience in healthcare IT and project management.

With a background spanning multiple NHS organisations, Luke has worked across palliative care, community dental services, and acute hospital settings, supporting digital transformation and IT system improvements. Now at DHU, Luke is focused on delivering key IT projects, enhancing digital infrastructure, and ensuring technology supports the organisation’s growth and patient care.

Luke spoke to us about the role, saying “While I’ve always had an interest in IT and digital technology, I wouldn’t call myself a technical expert. My focus has always been on project management—planning, coordinating, and ensuring systems work effectively by mitigating existing risks and issues. I started with an IT apprenticeship, gained project support experience, and later pursued formal qualifications like PRINCE2 to refine my skills whilst moving into formal project manager roles.

“At DHU Healthcare, my role is to oversee IT projects and ensure they align with the organisation’s needs. Right now, I’m focusing on key projects like the go-live of Corby Urgent Treatment Centre and Buxton Medical Centre, identifying IT priorities, and improving digital infrastructure across our services with projects such as Windows 11 Migration & Virtual Machine Upgrade. I understand how crucial IT is in healthcare, and I want to help embed a culture where it’s seen as a key enabler for success.”

“I’m particularly excited about working with DHU’s diverse services, from urgent care to GP practices and community health initiatives. The nature of DHU as a Community Interest Company means there are unique challenges when it comes to mobilising and demobilising contracts, and I’m keen to ensure IT plays a key role in supporting these transitions.”

“Beyond project work, I’m looking at broader IT improvements, including SharePoint integration and enhancing internal digital systems. A big part of my approach is fostering engagement—helping teams see IT not as a roadblock, but as a tool that can make their jobs easier.”

“I’m looking forward to making a positive impact at DHU, ensuring our IT service supports the organisation’s growth and operational service delivery. It’s a great team to be part of, and I’m excited for what’s ahead!”
