We’re speaking to Jeanette Allen today who has been with DHU Healthcare for over three years and is now beginning a new role as Staff Engagement Officer within the NHS111 team, based at Derby. From her vibrant career journey to her creative spirit and dedication to community initiatives, Jeanette is a great example of DHU’s values.

A Passion for Care

"I began my healthcare career 14 years ago in A&E. I was 18 and hoping to become a student nurse, but I quickly realised A&E wasn’t the right fit for me. I found my calling as a support worker, where I could dedicate more time to patients. From there, I worked as a midwife assistant in the labour suite before joining DHU. The shift patterns at DHU were a huge draw for me because they allowed me to better balance work with being a parent."

Creativity at Heart

"When I’m not working in healthcare, I love being creative. For four years before Covid-19, I ran my own business making bespoke wedding jewellery and decorations. It started as a way to cope with postnatal anxiety, but I’ve always loved being crafty. It came to an end as covid hit, as there were no weddings allowed, and I was looking after my mum who had stage 4 bowel cancer. Even without the business, I’m constantly making something—my husband jokes about all the supplies under our bed! I also love spending time with my family, like building a life-sized broomstick with my son. These moments remind me how much I enjoy creating and connecting with others."

Excited for the Future

"In my new role, I’m excited to get more involved and build connections, especially at bases like the Quad and Orbis. I’m also passionate about community initiatives, like supporting clothing and toiletry drives, and I’m looking forward to the launch of DHU’s 'Great Adventure,' a virtual walking tour designed to promote inclusivity and well-being."

Reflections and Growth

"My career journey at DHU has faced setbacks when applying for roles, but those challenges have helped me grow. The support I’ve received here has been invaluable. As we start the new year, my message to my colleagues is: 'Embrace creativity, connect with your team, and never stop exploring new ways to make a positive impact. And if you have any ideas or projects you’d like to discuss, I’m always here and happy to connect!'"
