Dilfraz Sahin joined DHU Healthcare in January 2023 as a Health Advisor and has since taken on new challenges within the organisation, culminating in her current role in the CQI and DOS team. We’re speaking to her today about her journey and finding out more…
From London to Derby: A New Chapter
Prior to joining DHU, Dilfraz spent eight years as a Nursing Assistant at Homerton University Hospital in London and also worked part-time as a Pharmacy Dispenser Technician. These roles gave her invaluable insights into patient care and the importance of seamless healthcare services. When she saw a job opportunity at DHU Healthcare, it coincided with her decision to relocate to Derby after her marriage. “I wanted to stay in the healthcare sector because I have a higher diploma in Health Science. DHU offered me that chance,” she shares.
A Journey of Growth
Dilfraz started her DHU career as a Health Advisor, where she quickly adapted to the fast-paced environment of assessing patients’ needs and providing essential guidance. Her drive to grow led her to become a Coach, a role she held for three to four months before transitioning to her current position in the CQI and DOS team. This new role has introduced her to a different side of healthcare, focusing on service improvement and patient safety.
“It’s very different from being a Health Advisor,” she explains. “Now, we work backwards—starting with the Directory of Services (DOS) and investigating issues to find solutions. For example, if a patient visits a pharmacy and finds it closed during stated opening hours, we liaise with the regional DOS lead to understand and rectify the issue.”
Making a Difference Behind the Scenes
Although her current role doesn’t involve direct patient contact, Dilfraz emphasises its impact on patient care.“We still ensure patient safety. For instance, if an ambulance dispatch fails, we investigate why and implement changes to prevent delays in the future.” She finds the challenge of improving systems rewarding and values the collaborative support within DHU.
Skills for Success
When asked about the skills necessary for her role, Dilfraz highlights the importance of multitasking, broad knowledge of healthcare services, and an in-depth understanding of DHU’s pathways and policies.
“You don’t need to know everything off by heart, but you need to know where to find the information quickly. Being alert and adaptable is crucial, especially when emergencies arise.”
A Promising Future
Dilfraz’s journey at DHU has been marked by continuous learning and professional development. “The first nine months were focused on mastering the systems and pathways. With the support of my managers and colleagues, I’ve been able to grow and take on more responsibilities. The more exposure you get, the more confident you become.”
Despite the challenges, Dilfraz is enthusiastic about her role and the difference she’s making. “I’m really enjoying it. The work is busy, but it’s rewarding to know that what we do in the background directly impacts patient care and safety.”
