DHU Healthcare would like to recognise the invaluable role of HR professionals and their positive contribution to organisations.
Each year, on 20th May which is International HR Day, the European Association for People Management selects a theme which, in 2024, is on:
- Championing Ethical Tech & AI Integration
- Redefined Future Workplaces
- Excellence in People Leadership
- Continuous Investment in Skills and Education
This year, we caught up with Gareth Keeling, who is a great example of DHU’s continuous investment in skills and education.
Gareth's journey into HR wasn't conventional. Whilst pursuing his undergraduate degree in Sports Management, he discovered his passion for Human Resources during a brief module. Intrigued, he went on to complete a Master's in HR Management, finishing with merit.
"I started my career as a Healthcare Coordinator in a private healthcare company, which exposed me to various areas of HR and served as an excellent first step on the ladder. Following that, I joined DHU Healthcare as a HR Coordinator, and I've been with DHU for just over two years.
"It was really interesting starting at DHU; it was completely different from my previous role. There were a lot of new things to adapt to and new ways of working within a close-knit team. It was an exciting time, especially with the company undergoing significant changes, including relocating our head office.
"DHU is committed to driving culture change through initiatives like the 'Inspire' program, where our values, people pledge and behavioural framework are all integral. I'm passionate about supporting this transformation. Creating a supportive culture like DHU's isn't common, and achieving it requires dedicated effort."
In his current role as a People and Culture Business Partner within DHU’s NHS111 team, Gareth faces new responsibilities and challenges. "It's a completely different environment, and building strong relationships has been one of my key priorities," he explains.
Gareth places a strong emphasis on personal development. "As a People and Culture Business Partner, I serve as the point of contact for our people, supporting their needs and building relationships," he says. "Supporting colleagues through their challenges, promoting their wellbeing, and ensuring positive experiences align with business needs are immensely rewarding aspects of my role."
Gareth acknowledges the transformation of HR into People and Culture, emphasising the positive shift it represents. "HR has had a bad reputation in the past, but the move to People and Culture truly embodies how the profession is changing for the better," he notes.
"It's a privilege to work at DHU Healthcare and support our colleagues in providing the patient care we are known for," Gareth concludes.
On International HR Day, let's celebrate professionals like Gareth Keeler, whose dedication to continuous learning, support, and positive change makes a significant difference in the workplace and beyond.
