DHU Healthcare Presents £5,000 Cheque to Cancer Research UK Following Sahara Stars Fundraising Success

Following the incredible efforts of DHU Healthcare’s “Sahara Stars” in their trek across the Sahara Desert, the team was delighted to welcome representatives from Cancer Research UK to The Quad in Chesterfield to formally present a £5,000 donation raised through their fundraising campaign.

The cheque presentation was attended by some of the Sahara Stars fundraising team, alongside DHU Healthcare CEO Stephen Bateman. Also present were Debbie Kemp (Operations Manager UEC North), Viny Singh (IT Digital Project Manager), Kirsty Osborn (Deputy Director Urgent Care North), Sue and Joan from Cancer Research UK, and Angus Wingfield from Africa Wild Trails, who played key roles in both the fundraising efforts and the challenging Moroccan trek.

The funds were raised through the dedication of colleagues across DHU Healthcare, who supported the Sahara Stars in their mission to not only complete the gruelling 37-mile trek in 35°C heat but also provide vital life support training to local communities in Morocco.

Stephen Bateman, CEO of DHU Healthcare, expressed his pride in the team’s accomplishments: “Seeing our colleagues take on such an immense challenge while making a tangible impact in communities abroad is truly inspiring. The generosity and support from everyone across DHU to help raise these funds has been incredible. We are proud to stand behind Cancer Research UK and contribute towards the vital work they do in fighting cancer.”

The Sahara Stars’ trek in September 2024 saw them provide Basic Life Support and First Aid training to 40 teachers at Taghbalte Secondary School, as well as assist in the construction of a women’s shelter at Ifrad School. Their mission was not only to raise funds but to leave a lasting impact on the communities they visited.

Debbie Kemp, Operations Manager UEC North, added: “Handing over this cheque is a fantastic moment for us all. It represents the hard work, generosity, and commitment of DHU colleagues who rallied behind this cause. We are immensely grateful to everyone who donated and supported our journey. Every penny raised will help Cancer Research UK continue their life-saving research.”
