February has been a particularly meaningful time to share stories to raise awareness and funds for heart health during 'Go Red for Heart Month'.
Among the inspiring stories we have heard, Health Advisor Chris James, who is based at Orbis in Derby, has a story that highlights his bravery as well as the power of medical advancements...
"My journey began in the sixties when I was born as a prem and blue baby, immediately facing the daunting challenge of congenital heart problems. Doctors rushed me to the Old Derbyshire Children’s Hospital, where I was diagnosed with a Ventricular Septal Defect, a hole in the heart. At that time, survival rates for such conditions were grim, but I was one of the fortunate few to survive infancy.
“Throughout my childhood, I underwent numerous medical interventions, including a delicate 11-hour open-heart surgery in 1978 to patch the hole in my heart. Despite the risks, I emerged victorious, albeit with lingering health issues that persisted into adulthood.
“In recent years, I've faced new challenges with courage and determination. Amidst battling palpitations and other symptoms related to my previous surgeries, I underwent further treatments, including medication and an ablation procedure to address arrhythmias, caused by my earlier surgeries. Despite setbacks, including a bout with covid in 2023 that worsened my heart issues, I remained steadfast in my fight for health and wellbeing.
“My journey is not just one of personal triumph but also one of unwavering dedication to supporting others facing similar struggles. My commitment to the British Heart Foundation, through monthly contributions to the BHF lottery, demonstrates my enduring gratitude for the advancements in heart health research that have enabled me to thrive despite my condition.
“As DHU Healthcare have proudly supported the BHF and raised funds towards heart conditions, my story serves as a reminder of the importance of such initiatives. By coming together as a community, we not only honour individuals like me who have overcome incredible odds, but also contribute to lifesaving research that continues to improve outcomes for countless others facing similar challenges.
“As I prepare for my second ablation procedure, scheduled for March, I stand in solidarity with all those whose lives have been touched by heart conditions. Through our collective efforts, we restate our commitment to supporting each other and advancing the fight against heart disease."
