Congratulations to three incredible colleagues at Eyam Surgery who have been rewarded for their service to the community.
Medical Secretary Claire Threapleton and Practice Nurse Sue Dear received a 30-year honour with Senior Care Navigator Marie Brown handed one for 35 years’ service from the General Practice Long Service awards.
It not only shows how important Eyam Surgery is to the local community but also the loyalty, dedication and experience our colleagues have to draw on to provide incredible, compassionate care for patients.
Marie has been described by her colleagues as a walking, talking encyclopaedia on all things surgery related and is an integral part of the team. She told us: “I’ve seen Eyam Surgery develop from the old building, into a portacabin in a car park whilst this building was developed, into this lovely building and facility we have now, a place our patients can be proud to visit.
“I started as a receptionist, but my responsibilities grew and I worked my way into accounts clerk and senior care navigator that keeps me very busy. I always say that whenever you are willing to change with the times, you will get satisfaction out of your job and after 35 years, I’ve got a superb team I’m delighted to work with."
Medical Secretary Claire Threapleton added: “I’ve had a number of different roles in my 30 years and the ones at Eyam have been some of the happiest of my life. I started off overseeing practice budgets at Baslow Medical Centre in 1994 before playing my part in setting up Primary Care Trusts whilst at Newholme hospital. I came here as a medical secretary and receptionist at Eyam Surgery in 2012; it felt like a homecoming and it’s our brilliant cohesive team that I love about Eyam, we help and support each other no matter what.”

Meanwhile Practice Nurse Sue Dear got her first nurse uniform as a child and said: “I qualified in 1992 as a graduate nurse, initially working in hospitals that consolidated my knowledge and skills. I’ve been at Eyam Surgery since 2001, where I’ve completed many training courses, including my Masters degree and non-medical prescribing course, specialising in working with patients to provide care for long term conditions. I also lead on the delivery of immunisation programmes.
“I’m thankful to all our lovely patients and colleagues, past and present, who have helped make my nursing career thoroughly enjoyable. What would I say to my five-year-old self playing in my first nurse uniform? Go for it, you are truly going to love nursing.”
Everyone at Eyam Surgery and across DHU are immensely grateful for the commitment, professionalism and the warmth that Claire, Sue and Marie have brought and continue to bring to the practice. Congratulations to you all - it’s a privilege to work alongside you!
