We love to share news of the brilliant work done by our clinical teams to support our patients and give them the best compassionate, professional care.

Sometimes we hear from the patients and their families themselves and, for us, it is a privilege to understand how our care has worked for them and made the difference in their lives.

Here is one such story from Maureen in Leicestershire whose elderly mother was looked after by our Falls Service in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR). Here’s what Maureen told us…

“My Mum is in her 90s and lives on her own but I visit regularly to look after her, make sure she’s okay and has everything she needs to be comfortable and well. One evening I went to see her and she was on the floor, she’d fallen and couldn’t get back up.

“She is only four feet ten inches and stick thin, but I’m no spring chicken myself and couldn’t get her back into a chair. I rang for an ambulance, and they said they would be a good few hours so I thought I’d make her comfortable, give her a wash and some food to ensure she would be in the best condition possible for when the paramedics arrived.

“Within about half an hour, two gentlemen, both called Steve, arrived at the door from DHU Healthcare’s Falls Service. I couldn’t believe how quickly they arrived and they immediately put me and my mum at ease and within ten seconds had gently lifted her up very carefully to her feet and began checking her over from head to toe.

“They were so caring, thorough and insisted on making sure that Mum could walk from room to room and that there were no obstacles in the way that might lead to another fall. They talked through some of her routines and undertook a number of test with oximeters, took her temperature and other observations to see if there was a reason behind her fall.

“I told them that she had recently changed her blood pressure medical that may have led to her fall and during her assessment they discovered that she had broken her finger and would need to go to A&E.

“I didn’t know anything about DHU before but they were so caring and professional, I can’t praise them enough for what they did for me and my Mum that day. You should be proud to have two such incredible and caring people looking after patients, they are true assets and I cant thank them enough.”
