Susie and Emily, who both work in our NHS 111 service, are putting their own spin on the Snowdon challenge this September, taking on the mountain together on 14 September while raising money for The Dignity Project, part of the charity One by One.
With accommodation already booked in the area, the pair decided to make the most of the opportunity and continue with the climb themselves, combining a personal challenge with fundraising for a cause that is close to their hearts.
For Susie, the challenge has a very personal meaning. With a significant birthday coming up next year, she sees the climb as the first part of marking the occasion. But, as she admits, it will be no small achievement.
“This may not seem like a huge challenge but as someone who has 2 dodgy knees, works in an office and drives everywhere it really is a huge challenge!”
Susie and Emily are taking on the climb as part of The Dignity Project's Go the Distance for Dignity challenge, which aims to raise funds to reach another 5,000 girls this year.
The Dignity Project supports girls who don't have access to menstrual health support by providing education, reusable sanitary products and underwear. The aim is to help girls stay in school while giving them greater safety, confidence and protection from exploitation and trafficking.
For Susie, it's a cause that deserves greater awareness.
“The Dignity Project seeks to reach the girls before the traffickers do so they can stay in school.”
She explains that the project provides education around menstrual health and how traffickers operate, alongside practical support.
“They provide education on menstrual health and how the traffickers work, reusable sanitary products and underwear, restoring their dignity, safety and confidence.”
The message at the heart of the project is a powerful one, with girls being reminded that: “They have the right to say no” and “they are not for sale”.
