After 29 years of service as a police constable, Martin Connor was ready for a new challenge. Following a short break and a stint delivering beauty products, he found himself looking for something more meaningful and that’s when he joined DHU Healthcare as a driver supporting our urgent care teams in Northamptonshire.

“I knew I still had something to give,” Martin said. “I didn’t want to just do any job…I wanted to do something that felt worthwhile, and this really fit the bill.”

Martin joined DHU in spring 2025 and now works regular shifts transporting GPs to home visits in the community, based out of the Daventry centre. He plays a vital role in helping patients receive timely care in their homes, often in rural areas, and is part of a close-knit team.

“Daventry’s a small base, which is nice because you get to know the clinicians and the reception team really well,” he added. “Everyone’s friendly and supportive, and there’s a great atmosphere.”

Martin is also quick to praise the leadership and support from his manager, Gary Wood. “He’s a top man, supportive and available if you need him, but he trusts you to get on with the job. It’s the perfect balance. You feel valued and respected.”

It’s that culture of trust and simplicity that Martin says sets DHU apart. “One of the things I love is that I can go a week without opening my inbox and only have three emails waiting for me. That’s a big change!”

Martin enjoys the flexibility of his shifts and the sense of purpose that comes with helping others. “It gives me a routine and I feel like I’m still contributing. And honestly, I love that I’m not drowning in emails anymore!”

Already a familiar face behind the wheel at Daventry, Martin brings experience, calm, and compassion to every shift, helping ensure patients get the care they need, wherever they are.
