For Aaron, finance is something that’s quickly become the start of a rewarding career journey.
Aaron joined DHU Healthcare as a Junior Finance Assistant, bringing with him a background in business, accounts and finance studies, alongside early experience in office-based roles. “This is my first full-time job in finance,” he explains. “I studied business, accounts and finance, so I already had some of the foundations in place, but I’m learning a lot as I go.”
Alongside his role at DHU, Aaron is also continuing his professional development through a finance apprenticeship-style learning programme, giving him the opportunity to build his skills while gaining hands-on experience in the workplace.
“I’ve been doing the course since February last year and I’m due to finish soon,” he says. “I enjoy it because I already had some knowledge from my studies, but it’s helped me apply it in a real working environment.”
Learning in a fast-paced environment
In his day-to-day role, Aaron supports the wider finance team with key processes including processing invoices, checking records and supporting monthly reporting cycles.
“I work with invoices and reports as part of the month-end process,” he explains. “We check everything is correct and make sure things are processed accurately. It can be quite detailed, but I enjoy that side of it.”
Like many colleagues working in finance, Aaron is also adapting to new systems and ways of working as DHU continues to modernise processes. “We’re moving more towards automated systems, which is helping reduce manual work,” he says. “It’s been interesting learning how everything links together.”
Collaboration across teams
Although finance is often seen as a behind-the-scenes function, Aaron says the role involves regular communication with colleagues across DHU. “We do work with different teams to clarify information and make sure everything is correct,” he says. “It’s important to ask questions and check things so we can keep everything accurate.” He adds that support from colleagues has made a big difference during his early career development. “Everyone’s been really helpful,” he says. “If I’m unsure about something, there’s always someone I can ask. That’s made it a lot easier to settle in.”
Looking ahead
As he continues his training, Aaron is focused on building his skills and progressing within finance. “I’m finishing my current course soon, and I’m thinking about doing further qualifications like CIMA in the future,” he says. “It’s quite a big step, but I’d like to keep developing and see where it takes me.” For now, Aaron is focused on learning as much as possible and gaining experience across different areas of finance.
“It’s been a really good start,” he says. “I’m still learning every day, but I’m enjoying it.”
