Colleagues from DHU Healthcare’s local GP surgeries joined partners from across Leicester’s health and care system at the SOCOPA St Matthew’s Health and Wellbeing Event on Sunday 27 October, held at the St Matthew’s Neighbourhood Centre.

The public event, which ran from 11 am to 2 pm, brought together organisations and community groups to raise awareness of local health and wellbeing services and to encourage residents to take proactive steps in managing both their physical and mental health.

Dr Saurabh Johri, DHU Healthcare’s Regional Clinical Director and Lead GP at Heron GP Surgery, said:

“Events like this are about much more than raising awareness, they are about addressing the wider social inequalities that impact health outcomes in our communities.

"The NHS Long Term Plan sets a clear direction to reduce health inequalities by bringing care closer to people’s lives. As a social enterprise and Community Interest Company, DHU Healthcare plays a vital role in making that vision a reality, supporting prevention, early intervention and wellbeing through genuine community partnerships.”

During the event, DHU colleagues provided free blood pressure checks, offered advice on diabetes and lifestyle health, and helped attendees understand how to access GP and digital health services through the NHS App.

Also present was DHU’s Sip ‘n’ Support scheme, which offers a safe and welcoming space for people to come together, have a chat and access informal wellbeing advice over a cup of tea or coffee. The initiative aims to reduce loneliness, improve mental health, and help connect people with community support and healthcare services.

Dr Johri added: “By listening to and learning from our local population, we can have services that truly meet people where they are. Collaboration between primary care, voluntary organisations and the community is essential to building a healthier, more equal future for Leicester.”

The St Matthew’s Health and Wellbeing Event once again showcased the importance of partnership working in tackling health inequalities and improving access to care, which is central to DHU Healthcare’s mission to deliver compassionate, inclusive and community-focused healthcare for all.
