One of DHU’s Directors is running the Edinburgh Marathon to raise vital money for a life-saving Derbyshire NHS charity.
DHU Director of Urgent and Emergency Care Derbyshire, Kirsty Osborn (pictured above on the right with her sister, Lisa), is running to raise money for Derbyshire Blood Bikes that directly supports some of the care DHU provides.
As a not-for profit, Community Interest Company, DHU is committed to supporting local communities and projects that have a social impact. Derbyshire Blood Bikes’ work as a medical courier helps to ensure that essential items are delivered quickly and safely across the region, including diagnostic samples, medication, blood and blood products.
"Continuity of care for patients..."
Kirsty will be running the Edinburgh Marathon with her sister, Lisa, on Sunday 24th May, she told us: “The Derbyshire Blood Bikes is particularly important outside of routine hours, including weekends, when the usual standard transport services are not always available. Their volunteers regularly support the transport of blood samples to local hospitals, helping maintain continuity of care for our patients.
“One of my DHU colleagues, Head of Clinical Services Ian Ware, volunteers with the charity which just highlights further the mutual partnership we’ve developed over the years. As a not-for-profit, Community Interest Company, we have a shared commitment to give back to the communities we serve so what I’m doing with my sister in Edinburgh is important to me both personally and professionally.”
Kirsty has been balancing long-distance running and weekly training alongside her role at DHU. Though the 26.2-mile route through Edinburgh will be a challenge, it’s a chance to raise awareness and support for a charity that delivers real impact locally.
"Whatever the weather..."
DHU Head of Clinical Service Ian Ware (pictured above, right), who volunteers for Blood Bikes Derbyshire added: “I was aware of the Blood Biking service from my work within the NHS so having obtained my Advanced Rider qualification through RoSPA I was able to combine my passion for motorbikes with dedicating some of my spare time.
“We go out every day and night whatever the weather, often in rush hour traffic and needing 100% focus on the job in hand to get to the destination in good time. It’s something I enjoy and gives me a sense of positivity. Donations are needed now more than ever with the increased fuel prices estimated to create an annual fuel cost for the charity £5,000 up on the last year.”
