Over the weekend Ian Ware (DHU Head of Clinical Services – Derbyshire) and members of the Derbyshire Community Male Voice Choir battled through record temperatures to successfully complete a 26 mile ‘Mighty Hike’ challenge for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Over 2000 hikers were out in the extreme heat and many struggled to complete the walk under the difficult conditions. Ian and the Derbyshire Community Male Voice Choir were proud to announce that they had smashed their target and raised nearly 4k for the cancer charity.
The Derbyshire Community Male Voice Choir have worked closely with DHU Health Care in the past, having been a mainstay at our Christmas events and also making a memorable appearance at our 2019 staff engagements events.
Ian said: “Thank you to DHU and all those who sponsored me separately to complete the Marathon Hike Saturday 17th July. The Northumbria coast was beautiful but gruelling in the extreme heat. The heat got the better of some of the 2000+ hikers as did injuries. Three of our team of five completed the marathon miles.
“I certainly underestimated the distance and the toll that takes, never mind in 29 degree sun, the last 6 miles were particularly painful but this made me more determined to push through faster for a strong finish time. We went way past our £2000 target, raising £3698 for Macmillan Cancer Support with donations still being added.”
