Dr Thomas Oelmann Statement

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Dr Thomas Oelmann, who was being treated in Glenfield General Hospital. Dr Thomas Oelmann, aged 57, was admitted with a dissecting aortic aneurysm and whilst in hospital was also found to be COVID-19 positive. He sadly passed away on Thursday 23rd April.

Stephen Bateman, CEO of DHU Health Care said: “On Thursday I was informed of the tragic news that Dr Thomas Oelmann, one of our DHU family and long serving Out of Hours clinicians in Leicestershire, had sadly passed away. Our thoughts are with his Nenita, his partner, and his five brothers, sister and friends as they come to terms with their loss.

“It is at times like this where we must come together, demonstrate once again our CARE values that are at the heart of DHU and support each other. There is nothing more important than the health and wellbeing of our staff as we come together on the frontline in the battle against this virus.’’

Saurabh Johri, Clinical Director at DHU Health Care said: “Thomas has been a stalwart and a member of our Out of Hours family in its various guises for many years.

“I first met Thomas 17 years ago when we both worked for PrimeCare carrying out home visits. He later worked for the PCT carrying out telephone consultations and home visits.

“Thomas was also a teacher. He taught countless GP Registrars over the years and many of you are now fully-fledged GPs who continue to work out of hours. He supported many clinicians as they trained to become prescribers. He supported all of us in his role as a Clinical Lead, approaching this role with patience, calmness and good humour. I know that in particular, our Triage Nurses will deeply feel his loss.”
